Great Starter Set August 16, 2010 Ryan M. Groat (Fort Huachuca, AZ) I ordered this set to begin my journey into wetshaving. In this fashion it has served me well. The Merkur HD razor that came in the kit is fantastic. I couldn't think of a better razor to start out with. The brush does its job well enough for a starter brush. The stand that comes with the kit looks great and helps to dry out all the shaving apparatus. The bowl that comes in the kit is subpar. As some others have noted, after only a week of use the inside of the bowl was beginning to show plating loss. I'm not sure what it was meant to be used for if not to hold the soap. The Col. Conk soap that came in the kit is decent, but there are better soaps out there for the money. I found the Conk stuff to not last very long, either.
good brush bad dish July 30, 2010 Ms. K. E. Malish (Hillsboro, OR United States) I purchased this a gift for my husband. He loved it. The brush and razor with stand are great. The bowl not so much. The plating has come off in chunks from the inside of the bowl. It looks beyond tacky and I can only imagine what the inside of the dish is now leaking into the soap since the chrome plating is no longer there. I would recommend getting this but have a second bowl on standby for when the plating comes off. The poor quality is apparent in the bowl. Our bowl has had nothing but glicern soap in it and it has not been dropped or damaged in any way. The plating has come off roughly half of the inside of the bowl. It is fine on the outside.
shaving set April 18, 2010 Ashutosh Sood (Tampa, Fl) This is my first wet shave kit and I am very happy with it.The merkur safety razor is very good and solid. I tried the col conk shaving soap and I had a body shop shaving cream for men , the shaving cream gave me a distinctly better shave.
A welcomed gift for a man who prefers a wet shave March 8, 2010 Lori Lewis The shaving set is attractive for display as well as useful for the man who prefers an old fashioned wet shave. Being a gift for someone, I cannot comments on its qualities in use, but the set feels solid and well made. For instance, the reptacles for the razor and brush are heavy weight and would not likely ever bend or distort even if dropped. There is no seam on the brush handle as I've seen on some not-inexpensive brushes. In fact, the brush handle is heavier than I expected, and I imagine this feels good in a man's hand.
Ron's Christmas Gift 2009 - Merkur Razor March 6, 2010 SUZETTE Ron often mentioned how much the new razors cost and wished he had an old-fashioned razor with blades. As a Christmas idea, I started to search several sites for online possibilities. I could not believe how many choices and price ranges were available. When I found this 5-piece kit, I knew immediately that this was 'the one'! Not only was the price affordable, but Ron loves the razor and the close shave that he gets [for me!]. I also bought a separate butterfly razor to give him an option but he much prefers the Merkur Safety Razor. The other one keeps opening and knicks him without notice. We both recommend this set.
[Tip: He just found economical double-edge blades at a local department store.]
